Global Health Courses
Because of a class that I happened to take during my first semester entitled "Race and Racism" I found a passion for improving health disparities. While completing my anthropology minor, I learned more about the world around me and found new though processes to solve problems. I am excited that I found this way to incorporate my passions and career interests in a meaningful way so that I can be the most inclusive, effective, and understanding physician possible.
Coursework
Race and Racism
Race and Racism explored the deep roots of racism in our country and helped me learn about structural racism and societal norms that enforce it. This sparked my passion as a future healthcare professional because I realized just how many patients are lost just because of their race.
Language and Culture
Language and Culture allowed me to learn about the development of language in different cultures and how language acquisition works. It was fascinating to learn that languages across the globe developed at relatively similar rates and with similar patterns although there was no contact.
Introduction to World Archaeology
In this class, I learned about all of the landmarks and peoples of the world through an archaeological perspective. I have always been intrigued by archaeology and I appreciate that this minor allowed me to explore that passion.
Global Health Culture
In this course, I read two books that altered my perspectivie on medical interventions and their success, or lack thereof, in countries of low socioeconomic status. I learned that often what we believe to be the best medical treatment is not the best for the different contexts and beliefs seen in cultures that are different from ours.
Culture and Medicine
This course taught me the basics about medical anthropology and how it can be applied to improve health outcomes in different global communities. I now understand that biocultural factors play a large role in healthcare, the assumptions that we make, and how we treat others.
