Spanish Courses at UF

My love for studying Spanish is what got me started on my international journey, so I wanted to take some space to highlight a few of my favorite Spanish classes that I took while pursuing my Spanish minor.

Bad Bunny: The Phenom

When I found out that there was a Spanish class that incorporated modern music from someone as influential as Bad Bunny, I knew that I needed to take it. This class helped me learn about Puerto Rico, how to understand tough accents, and the impact of the globalization of music. This was by far my favorite class that I took at UF and I am so glad that my Spanish minor gave me the opportunity to take it.

Flamenco

During my study abroad experience in Seville, Spain, one of the classes offered was Flamenco, which was created in the Andalusia region where I was studying. The rich history of the dance style surprised me as it was formed from aspects of many cultures and includes several techniques with different props. Our teachers were Flamenco dancers and we had the privilege to immerse ourselves further in Sevillian culture by learning some of the dance steps and attending a traditional Flamenco tablao.

Spanish in Contact

In my final Spanish class at UF, I had the opportunity to bring together some of my anthropological interests into my language learning. It has been incredibly interesting to learn about the relationship between languages that are in contact with each other and how they influence the evolution of language in the area. As a part of the class, I explored the Mayan languages in central Mexico and the Yucatan peninsula and how they continue to be impacted by the non-native Spanish language brought over during the European conquest of the Americas. My presentation can be found linked here.
